Day 4 of Western NSW+ Trip (Cassilis, Wiradjuri Country) 6/5/22
The beauty of not having a plan is that you can't arrive anywhere late. We had thought we might get a little further than we are today but ... we didn't. We might have hoped for somewhere quieter but a free camp (Cassilis Park Rest Area) on the way to where you are going is not to be sneezed at.
Today we spent quite a while in Singleton checking out the post office, supermarket, op shops, water filling stations etc, and enjoyed a looong chat with the woman in the info centre (who was very helpful).
There is a good art gallery attached to the Info Centre in which there were a number of exhibitions, all worth visiting. There was a photographic exhibition of Singleton locals, some landscape works and an exhibition by a local Wonnarua/Wanaruah woman, Debbie Becker. The art work I have pictured here (from a free postcard) talks of the horrible history of 1826 in the Hunter Valley.
Nowhere was this explained in any more detail but I have found a website that explains it quite well. If you are interested, follow this link, well worth it. A Month of Murders. In this area, land grants were given out to whites from 1824.
Mining has certainly provided Singleton with some great amenities, none more obvious than the incredible playgrounds (yes, I know I'm not playground age any more but maybe I could take grandchildren).
